PHAR 411 | P1 Fall | Pharmacy Practice Week | 40 Hours/5 Days | Pharmacy Practice Week is a week-long (40 hours) experience in which the student attends a site with a pharmacist or P4 preceptor as a means to be introduced to the profession of pharmacy. The experiences the student has during Pharmacy Practice Week will help them understand the role of the pharmacist in that practice setting. |
PHAR 412 | P1 Spring/P2 Fall | Community IPPE | 96 Hours/12 Weeks | This is an experiential course where students will be provided an overview of contemporary pharmacy practice in a community setting. Students will spend the vast majority of their time at a community site for an introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE). The goal of this experience is to engage students in an environment that will enable them to observe and develop the skills necessary to practice in a community setting. At the conclusion of the experience students should be comfortable with interpreting a prescription, filling a prescription, and providing patient counseling under pharmacist supervision. |
PHAR 413 | P1 Spring/P2 Fall | Hospital IPPE | 48 Hours/6 Weeks | This is an experiential course where students will be provided an overview of contemporary pharmacy practice in a hospital setting. Students will spend their time engaged in on-site hospital IPPE activities. The goal of this experience is to expand student understanding of the medication use process in a hospital setting, roles and responsibilities of pharmacists and technicians as well as interprofessional team dynamics. |
PHAR 515/516 | P3 Fall and P3 Spring | Direct Patient Care IPPE (Institutional/Hospital/Ambulatory Care/Community | 96 Hours/12 Weeks | Patient Care in an Institutional / Hospital setting (PHAR 515) and Ambulatory Care/Community (PHAR 516) are courses in the Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) series designed to aid third year pharmacy students with the transition to Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). The primary settings for these courses are in a direct patient care setting where the student will apply the didactic and early experiential coursework to the patient care setting. |

PHAR 601 | Ambulatory Patient Care | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, patient drug therapy optimization, clinical intervention, patient interviewing and professional verbal and written communication skills in an ambulatory care setting. Students will refine their skills in medication choice appropriateness, management, recommendation and monitoring. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of disease states in the ambulatory care patient population. |
PHAR 602 | Community Pharmacy | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of the skills necessary to practice in a community pharmacy setting. Students will refine their skills in interpreting a prescription, filling a prescription, checking and verifying a prescription and providing patient counseling under a pharmacist’s supervision. Additionally, they should demonstrate the ability to reconcile a patient’s medication history, optimize a patient’s drug therapy regimen, resolve medication adherence issues and make an over the counter recommendation. |
PHAR 603 | Hospital/Health System | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, expand student understanding of the medication use process in a hospital setting, roles and responsibilities of pharmacists and technicians as well as interprofessional team dynamics. Students should be comfortable interpreting a medication order, correctly compounding an intravenous medication, verifying and checking the accuracy of a filled medication order prior to dispensing and communicating with members of the hospital staff. |
PHAR 604 | Inpatient Medicine Patient Care | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, patient drug therapy optimization, clinical intervention, patient interviewing, and professional verbal and written communication skills in an inpatient medicine direct patient care setting. Students will refine their skills in medication choice appropriateness, management, recommendation and monitoring. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of disease states in the inpatient medicine patient population. |
PHAR 615 | Academic Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking and enhance a student’s awareness of a career in academia. The student will be provided with firsthand experience in an academic teaching environment and will understand the responsibilities of a faculty member in regards to teaching, scholarship and service. Students will refine their skills in professional verbal and written communication in the academic setting. |
PHAR 616 | Administrative Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking and provide the student with a clinical pharmacy experience in the management of a community or hospital pharmacy department including purchasing, personnel management, drug utilization review, various committees and the accreditation approval process. Students will refine their skills in professional verbal and written communication in the administrative setting. |
PHAR 617 | Advance Ambulatory Patient Care Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, patient drug therapy optimization, clinical intervention, patient interviewing, and professional verbal and written communication skills in an ambulatory care setting. Students will refine their skills in medication choice appropriateness, management, recommendation and monitoring. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of disease states in the ambulatory care patient population not covered in the core ambulatory care APPE. |
PHAR 618 | Advance Community Pharmacy Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of the skills necessary to practice in a community pharmacy setting. Students will refine their skills in interpreting a prescription, filling a prescription, checking and verifying a prescription and providing patient counseling under a pharmacist’s supervision. Additionally, they should demonstrate the ability to reconcile a patient’s medication history, optimize a patient’s drug therapy regimen, resolve medication adherence issues and make an over the counter recommendation. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of disease states and the practice of community pharmacy not covered in the core community APPE. |
PHAR 619 | Advanced Inpatient Medicine Care Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, patient drug therapy optimization, clinical intervention, patient interviewing, and professional verbal and written communication skills in an inpatient medicine direct patient care setting. Students will refine their skills in medication choice appropriateness, management, recommendation and monitoring. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of disease states in medicine patients not covered in the core medicine APPE. |
PHAR 620 | Advanced Specialty Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking and provide the student with a clinical pharmacy experience in a variety of specialty areas of practice including but not limited to pharmaceutical industry, government, pharmacy associations, international and other health care specialties. Students will refine their skills in both professional verbal and written communication in the administrative setting. |
PHAR 621 | Critical Care Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, patient drug therapy optimization, clinical intervention, patient interviewing, and professional verbal and written communication skills in a critical care inpatient medicine setting. Students will refine their skills in medication choice appropriateness, management, recommendation and monitoring. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of disease states in the critical care patient population. |
PHAR 622 | Drug Information Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, patient drug therapy optimization, clinical intervention and professional verbal and written communication skills in a drug information setting. Students will refine their skills in conducting systematic searches and extracting information from appropriate sources. Students will have an opportunity to evaluate the clinical literature and its use for decision making in patient care. |
PHAR 623 | Geriatrics Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, patient drug therapy optimization, clinical intervention, patient interviewing, and professional verbal and written communication skills in a geriatric setting. Students will refine their skills in patient interviewing, patient monitoring and medication management therapy. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of disease states in the geriatric patient population. |
PHAR 624 | Home Health Care Elective | The goal of this experience is to promote the continued development of critical thinking, patient drug optimization, clinical intervention, patient interviewing, and professional verbal and written communication skills in a home health care setting. Students will refine their skills in medication choice appropriateness, management, recommendation and monitoring. Emphasis will be placed on the treatment of disease states in the home healthcare patient population. |
